Movie Review: Cop Out

I won’t lie here, the only reason I saw this movie was because Kevin Smith was directing. Kevin Smith is one of my all time favorite screenwriters/actors/etc. He is hilarious. He is a down to earth dude with a huge heart and a lot on his mind. I was of course turned onto him after seeing Clerks, Clerks 2, Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob, the list goes on. After watching some of his films and having roommates who were huge fans as well, I fell in love with his work. I went out and bought his book, “My Boring Ass Life” which is, well, sometimes pretty boring. But that’s the life of Kevin Smith. That is why I was so excited when I saw he was going to be directing a movie for the first time.

The second reason I wanted to see this film was because it had one of my favorite actors, Tracey Morgan. I don’t care how horrible people thought his book was, this guy is hilarious. There is no doubting that. None. Zip. Nothing. I of course loved him back on SNL, when he would do Brian Fellows Safari Planet, which was by far one of my favorite sketches. After getting tuned into 30 Rock I got to see his acting in action once again.

Moving on, let me tell you what I was told going into the movie. I follow Kevin Smith on his twitter account and he was saying the movie was getting terrible reviews from critics. I usually don’t agree with critics, and I also never doubt Kevin Smiths super awesome magic skills, but of course after hearing something like that you tend to go into the film not knowing what to expect.

HOLY HELL. This movie was EPIC. So much better than I ever thought possible. I am not making this up. Within the first 10 minutes I was cracking up. No, this movie is not a tear jerker, inspirational, brooha type movie. This is a film for someone who wants to see a real comedy, chill out, not have to figure out weird twists and turns, and just have an overall good time. Ok, time to get to the plot. I won’t put any spoilers in, I promise.

The movie starts with Bruce and Tracey both working as partners for NYPD. I swear to God a lot of the scenes totally reminded me of playing Grand Theft Auto. Anyways. Something goes wrong, yatta yatta, and they end up getting suspended from their jobs. With Bruce having a daughter who is about to get married, he needs to get money, and fast. His ex wifes current husband is a total jerk but has a lot of money, and offers to pay for the wedding. Lets cut to the real deal here. Bruce says no go, and on begins the journey to getting ahold of roughly $50,000. That’s pretty much all I can tell you. I said I wouldn’t spoil anything.

Overall, the cast in this film does a fantastic job. Kevin Smith directs the film fabulously. I don’t have a single complaint about the film. If I was able to tell a movie critic about how I feel, I’m sure they would disagree. But then again, they LOVED Slumdog Millionare. Blech.

I give this film 5 stars.
